AN ACO member recently asked the following question:  I recently joined the U.S. Army as a prior service from the U.S. Marine Corps.  During my time with the Marines I received many medals and ribbons.  Thus lies my question; How do I know / find out what medals/ribbons are transferable between the two units (Marines to the Army)?

The answer to this question is not a straight line.  Many items need to be considered.  If you are an E-1 through E-6 the awards/ribbons you earned in another service could potentially count towards promotion points.  In addition you do not want to place items on your uniform without having the proper documentation to back up your awards or ribbons.

Here are several options that may provide assistance for individuals having similar issues:

There are several sources that may be useful in obtaining an answer concerning your question, they include:

Local Personnel Office:  Ensure you have all orders awarding medals or ribbons you have received.  Make an appointment with the personnel center.  Share these documents with the personnel center.  You will want to do this for several reasons.

  • Any awards or medal you may have received in another service may count towards promotion point to SSG.
  • In addition the awards that transfer to the Army will be annotated on your DA FORM 2-1 (if they still use this form).  Once added to your 2-1 and verified by Personnel this gives you legal authority to wear your awards.
  • If someone in the chain of command questions your ability to wear a ribbon or award the first place they will go is to your personnel file to see if it can be verified.
AR 670-1: Check under precedence specifically page number 266.
The IG is an excellent source of information.  In questions like this they may be able to provide specifics on references other than AR 670-1.
Website:  An alternate unofficial source is rackbuilder: http://www.armyawards.com
