How long does a leader have to write a counseling statement from the date of the incident?

There is no time limit on when a counseling must be conducted. ATP 6-22.1 states it should be conducted as close as possible to the incident as possible. The more time that passes the more questionable the counseling becomes but the relevance given to the counseling with regard to the timing and content will ultimately be evaluated by the 1SG/CDR if it is called into question. If you believe there is a problem with the timing or content I would encourage you to express your concerns by disagreeing and providing a factual, professional, and unemotional memorandum of rebuttal to the counseling in question
